One-year masters degrees and dense industry networks

The system

The UK's one-year taught masters is the most time-efficient postgraduate qualification we advise on. For a career-changer already earning, the difference between one year out and two is often the whole business case.

London's concentration of finance, media, law and increasingly deep-tech employers is genuinely hard to replicate elsewhere. The counterweights are cost — London living expenses are the highest on our list — and a post-study work position that has been less stable than candidates would like.

Where the opportunity is

Finance, law, creative industries, life sciences and a fast-growing deep-technology sector concentrated in London, Cambridge and Manchester.

Working there

Polite, indirect and heavily meeting-based. Feedback arrives softened; learning to hear it accurately is a genuine skill.

Living there

Dense, historic and superbly connected to the rest of Europe — with housing costs in London that shape every other decision.

FAQ United Kingdom

Is a one-year masters taken as seriously as a two-year one?

By UK and European employers, yes — it is the standard format. Some other systems evaluate it differently, which matters if you intend to move on again afterwards. We flag that during shortlisting.

Can I stay and work after graduating?

The Graduate route currently allows a period of unsponsored work after study, and moving onto a sponsored Skilled Worker visa is the usual next step. Rules here have changed more than once, so we plan with fallbacks.
